Safety At Sea Training at CCYC
CCYC offers U. S. Sailing sanctioned International Offshore Safety at Sea Hands-On Training. The course is open to all sailors.
Taking this important training will allow you to become a positive safety addition to your boat and crew mates! Additionally, the Chicago Mac Race requires that 50% of each boat's crew must hold a valid Safety At Sea certification, completed within the past 5 years.
Moderator
CCYC's Moderator is Bill Biewenga. Bill has accumulated over 400,000sea miles including 41 transatlantic crossings, several TransPacs,numerous sailing speed records, deliveries and races as well asonboard participation in four round-the-world races.
Course Structure
CCYC offers the Hands-On training as a one day course, in two sessions.
The morning session is in the water at the Northwestern Universitypool and covers PFD and Life Raft usage. The pool is located at

The afternoon session covers flares, fire extinguishers, boat safety equipment and more. It takes place at the CCYC Clubhouse:

Prerequisites
Prior to attending the Hands-On course, participants must complete either
- A US Sailing Sanctioned In-Person Offshore Safety at Sea Course - OR -
- A US Sailing Online Offshore Safety at Sea Course
All participants must have a valid Offshore Safety at Sea certificate completed no more than 365 days before taking the Hands-on training.
Upon completion of this Hands-On training, provided the prerequisite has been approved, participants will be sent via email from US Sailing, a digital US Sailing International Offshore Safety at Sea with Hands on Certification (this also complies with World Sailing Offshore Personal Survival Course guidelines). This Certification is valid for 5 Years.
Course Information
Each session is limited to (30) participants. The fee for the courseis $250, which includes:
- Lunch and an afternoon snack
- All facility fees, lectures, demonstrations, and course materials
- US Sailing's 220 Page Safety at Sea Guide
- Parking at both event locations.
- A Discount Code which allows registering for the US Sailing Online Offshore SAS course for an additional $80.
